Almost 40 extradition requests for those being investigated for the January 8 attacks have already reached the Brazilian embassy in Buenos Aires since Wednesday morning (16). Requests are being processed and will be forwarded to the Argentine Foreign Ministry.
THE CNN found that requests are gradually arriving at the embassy in Buenos Aires, after the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, ordered the extradition of 63 Brazilians considered fugitives from justice for their alleged involvement in the January 8 attacks, which fled to Argentina.
When contacted by the report, the embassy said it was unable to comment because extradition requests are subject to judicial secrecy.
In June, the Brazilian government received from Argentina a list of approximately 60 names of those wanted by Brazilian justice for the acts of January 8, who were in its territory. At that time, the PF began preparing the extradition request sent to the STF.
The information was forwarded by the Argentine authorities in response to the STF’s request with a list of 143 people convicted of the acts of January 8 who could be in Argentine territory.
Despite the move towards extradition, the majority of Brazilians have requested refuge in Argentina and, until the process is accepted or rejected by local authorities, they cannot be sent to Brazil.
At least 126 Brazilians requested refuge from the Argentine government between January and June this year, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In December 2023, no Brazilian requested asylum in Argentina.
