Brazilian environmentalist Chico Mendes will receive a biopic and documentary

A documentary and a biopic of the Brazilian environmentalist Chico Mendes are under development. The information was revealed by the CEO of Estúdio Escarlate, Joanna Henning, to Variety.

The first is scheduled to debut in November 2025 during the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in Belém, Pará.

Already the biopic n will be filmed in 2026 and released in 2027 . The actor Jorge Paz (“Marighella” and “The Hijacking of Flight 375”) will play Mendes.

According to the publication, the titles will be the first fully sustainable productions in Brazil and will be directed by Sergio Carvalho (“O Olhar Que Vem de Dentro” and “Noite Alienígenas”) and Sergio Machado (“Cidade Baixa” and “O Rio de Desire”).

Who was Chico Mendes?

Francisco Alves Mendes Filho was a Brazilian rubber tapper, trade unionist and environmental activist, known worldwide for his fight in defense of the Amazon and the rights of the people of the forest. Born in 1944 in Xapuri, in Acre, and son of northeastern migrants, since he was nine years old accompanied his father in extractive activities latex.

According to the federal government, it dedicated his life to preserving the Fforest THEmazônica and improving the living conditions of rubber tappers, being one of the founders of the National Council of Rubber Tappers. Furthermore, it promoted the creation of Rreserves ANDxtractive, protected areas where local communities can live and work sustainably.

Mendes was murdered in 1988. Brazil included him on the List of Heroes of the Brazilian Homelandand he was declared Patron of the Environment Brazilian “in recognition of his fight in defense of life in the forest and the Amazon itself”.
