Brazilian governors meet Prince Charles during COP26

The group of Governors for Climate met with Prince Charles, heir to the British crown, this Thursday (4) during the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), in Glasgow, Scotland, to discuss investments in climate actions.

Governors Renato Casagrande (PSB-ES), Eduardo Leite (PSDB-RS) and Mauro Mendes (DEM-MT) led the conversations with Charles. At the meeting, representatives of the governments of Pará, São Paulo and Minas Gerais were present. The mayor of Recife, João Campos, from the PSB, also accompanied the negotiations.

TO CNN, Governor Renato Casagrande said after the meeting that it was an “important meeting, as Charles is an activist, militant and is raising funds so that governments can make commitments”.

“We came here to present the consortium to him, to say that many governors are involved in a carbon neutralization plan. We have seen that the federal government has moved away from this issue in the last three years, a theme of preserving the planet, which today is an economic opportunity”, said the governor.

Parliamentarians and representatives of the group are part of the Consórcio Brasil Verde, chaired by Casagrande, an initiative recently created by governors to work together to promote actions to combat climate change and also to have a direct dialogue between local governments and international leaderships.

Environmental causes in Brazil

Still on the meeting with Prince Charles, Governor Casagrande highlighted the CNN the British monarch’s intention to get involved with causes in Brazil.

“Prince Charles made himself available, is building alternatives, he wants to make this connection with Brazil. We need to build important projects, but most of the investment will come from private companies if we manage to regulate the carbon market, if a document is issued that regulates the market, if Brazil accelerates in Congress, economic activities will resolve itself,” he said.

“We may have financing for decarbonization projects from private companies in Brazil and abroad, helping this new economy, which is essential for us to reach the goal of neutrality in 2050,” added the governor.
