A Brazilian who lives in Florida, in the United States, shared her experience during Hurricane Milton’s passage through the Tampa Bay region. Taciana Amorim reported moments of tension and apprehension experienced with her family.
According to Taciana, the first signs of the storm began to be noticed in the middle of the afternoon, around 3:30 pm on Wednesday (9). “It started with a lot of wind and heavy rain. We saw that we were really going to face a big hurricane”, he describes.
The family had been without electricity since early evening, resorting to flashlights to navigate in the darkness. For approximately four hours, they remained inside the house. “We kept hearing everything banging. Everything that was flying hit the windows”, says Taciana.
Solidarity and government support
Only this Thursday (10), at around 7:30 am, did the family manage to leave the house to assess the damage caused by the hurricane. Taciana highlights the solidarity between neighbors.
“The neighbors are all companions. They ask if everything is okay and if you need help”, says the Brazilian.
She also praises the authorities’ performance in responding to the emergency and highlights the efficiency of the rescue and fire teams. According to Taciane, the city hall where he lives used tractors and forklifts to remove trees and branches from the roads.
The school and stadium were prepared to welcome the population during the storm, but the Brazilian and her family were unable to go to these places. “It was a lot of rain and a lot of wind. The only way was to wait at home in prayers.”
