The Brazilian Leticia Vilhena Ferreira was arrested last Wednesday (16) in Illinois, in the United States, for having participated in the invasion of the Capitol, seat of the country’s Congress, on January 6, 2021.
According to the US Department of Justice, two complaints were filed against the Brazilian: knowingly entering or staying in any restricted building without reason or legal authority; and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.
The investigation report shows that a witness, who would have known Ferreira during the protest, delivered a video to the FBI that would have been shared with her by the Brazilian, also giving the authorities her phone number.
Thus, investigators discovered Leticia’s data and her whereabouts. On April 2, 2021, FBI agents interrogated Ferreira at his home in Indian Head Park, Illinois. At the time, she informed authorities that she traveled alone to Washington on January 5 of the same year, having returned home two days later.
The Brazilian also said that she had a work visa and was therefore not able to vote. Even so, she wanted to travel to the US capital to see then-President Donald Trump speak.
According to the investigation, she claimed not to have been able to hear or see Trump from where she was, so she followed the crowd to the Capitol and entered the building, having remained there for about 20 minutes.
During this period, the Brazilian took photos and videos, which served as additional confirmation for the authorities that she was present at the invasion.
Investigators were then able to locate Ferreira on videos taken by the Capitol’s security cameras, wearing clothing that matched the description she provided during interrogation.
The report further states that she was identified in videos taken by other attackers. In one of them, there is a moment of confrontation with the Capitol police, but “Ferreira does not appear to have participated in any attack on the officers”.
On August 26, 2021, a search was authorized on the Brazilian’s phone. In addition to verifying where she was on the day of the break-in, investigators obtained records of a conversation with another person, in which Ferreira claimed to have been at the Capitol on January 6.
“Do you think they will go after the people who entered the Capitol area?” asks the Brazilian. “Do not be sad. Be prepared,” replies the other person. “I was so irresponsible for walking there”, says Letícia. “I’m so irresponsible. Yesterday it seemed incredible”, says Ferreira at another point in the conversation.
Complaints against Leticia Ferreira were filed on February 14, 2022. Two days later, on February 16, she was arrested in Indian Park Head, Illinois.
Remember the US Capitol Invasion
During the joint session of Congress that would confirm Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 Presidential Election on January 6, 2021, hundreds of supporters of then-President Donald Trump marched to the building after months alleging vote fraud, which never happened before. has been proven and, on the contrary, has been denied by the main US authorities.
In the attack, the attackers managed to momentarily overcome the security of the place, entering the Capitol, destroying several objects – many with historical significance – and threatening the congressmen with death.
The vice president at the time, Mike Pence, who was running the session, members of Congress and journalists had to leave in a hurry, while a crowd climbed the stairs of the building and invaded the main halls. The hearing resumed only in the early hours of January 7, confirming Biden’s victory.
