The policeman was detained because, according to the investigation, he attracted private funds, which he squandered on investments.
Corporal Francisco de Assis Jesus de Oliveira, a military police officer who worked in the Metropolitan Tactical Offensive Operations Battalion (Rotam) in the Brazilian city of Goiania, is accused of fraud with cryptocurrencies.
By promising a return of up to 30% per month from investing funds in the crypto asset market, he was able to convince his colleagues to give him money for cryptocurrency trading.
According to the complaint filed by the victims, about a year ago, the officer began to give colleagues advice and guidance on investing in cryptocurrencies. Then he offered to participate in a joint project created and maintained by Francisco de Oliveira himself on an online platform based in the UK.
The complaint says that the detainee promised his colleagues that he would take responsibility for all possible risks. However, after several payments, he stated that the money was blocked on the platform for technical reasons.
According to the lawyer of the victims, Rubens Barbosa, 23 police officers were victims of the fraud, while de Oliveira is suspected of making illegal profits of about 1 million Brazilian reais, or about $190,000.
In July, Santander Brazil CEO Mario Leao told reporters that the bank plans to launch cryptocurrency trading services for Brazil branch customers in the coming months. In addition to cryptocurrency trading, the bank plans to sell digitized traditional market assets.
