Brazilian photographer found dead in France: see what is known about the case

The body of the photographer from Minas Gerais Flávio de Castro Sousa, 36 years old, was found last Thursday (9) in France, where he had been since the end of November. The corpse was located in the River Seine.

There is still no information about the body being transferred to Brazil.

Resident of Paris, philosopher and professor Rafael Basso, who was a friend of Flávio, told CNN what the information received is that the body was found in a city far from Paris and that identification was made through DNA testing. The cause of death was drowning.

“The body was found in the Seine, which is a very large river that flows into the sea. The police had warned that, given the weather conditions, the body could be found within six months. It appeared in a state of advanced decomposition and was recognized by DNA. Other analyzes are ongoing. The police rule out violence,” he explained.

Flávio Carrilho, as he was known, He had been missing since November 26th of last year, when he should have returned to Brazil. He was last seen on the day he was scheduled to fly back to Brazil. The family says they were informed by the airline that check-in for the flight to Brazil was done, but the photographer did not board.

Born in Candeias, in the interior of Minas Gerais, Flávio went to France for a work trip. He arrived in Paris on November 1st and, after professional commitments, he would stay there for vacation until the end of the month.

One day after the disappearance, a man named Alex, who Flávio had met during the trip, contacted a friend of the Brazilian via Instagram and said that he had had an accident and was hospitalized, but that he had been released from the emergency unit. health on the same day.

Family members reported that they were informed that, on the 26th, Flávio requested an extension, for another day, of his stay in the apartment where he was staying. He would have gone to the property and, since then, he has not responded to any more messages.

In a press release, the family adds that, according to Alex, all of the Brazilian’s belongings were removed from the apartment, including his passport. On December 12, the Brazilian’s cell phone and computer were handed over to the police.

At the end of December, Flávio’s family received information that the photographer was seen by a street camera on the banks of the River Seine.

Cell phone found in plant pot

Without news of her son, Flávio’s mother tried to call his cell phone insistently. In the early hours of the 28th, a stranger answered the phone. Because he didn’t speak Portuguese, this person passed his cell phone to a Brazilian who works in a restaurant in the French capital.

This Brazilian, identified as Denis, “talked to his mother and explained that they found the cell phone in a plant pot, around 7 am on November 27th, at the restaurant door”, says the note sent by the family.

A cousin of Flávio reported at the end of the month that the French authorities analyzed the images from the cameras where the Brazilian passed and verified that it was Flávio himself who left his cell phone in the toilet.

According to Flávio’s cousin, the urban monitoring cameras in the region rotated 360º, and at a certain point, when the camera rotated and refocused on the same location, the photographer was no longer there.

The man who sent the message is French and would have met Flávio during the trip to Paris. In recent weeks, the miner even published photos and videos with Alex. THE CNN contacted the boy, who did not comment on the matter.

Who was the photographer?

On his Instagram profile, the professional described himself as a lover of analog photography. Throughout November, the native of Minas Gerais posted several images of his trip to Paris, capturing tourist attractions such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Louvre Museum, the Pont des Arts and the Eiffel Tower.

In his last post, made the day before his disappearance, he appears with a camera in front of the Louvre Museum.
