Brazilian physiotherapist tells experience of leaving Ukraine during conflict

After months of military escalation and intemperance on the Ukrainian border, Russia attacked the Eastern European country on Thursday. Since then, Russian forces have carried out bombings in different regions of the country – follow the special coverage of the CNN.

In an interview with CNN, the physiotherapist of the Ukrainian football club Shakhtar, Luciano Rosa, related how he and athletes managed to leave the country. Speaking from a bus in Bucharest, Romania, en route to the airport, Rosa said the group faced uncertainty about leaving Ukraine.

“Since leaving the hotel, the risk has been very high, because we left in the middle of the conflict, in the central region. We didn’t know if we were going to leave or not, it was a question because the gusts were close to the hotel”, he reports.

According to him, the group had the support of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

“UEfa made contact with all federations in Ukraine, Moldova and Romania, providing support throughout the trip. We had support to get out of the hotel safely to the station, it took 16 hours by train, everyone crowded together, but no problem, we want to get to the destination”, he said.

The group includes Brazilian athletes, two Uruguayans, as well as family members and other people. This Monday (28), they arrived at the Romanian airport from where they board to Paris, France, and then to Brazil, with an expected arrival date on Tuesday morning (1st).

“It is a feeling of relief, of not knowing if the nightmare is over, but also of anguish for Ukrainian friends who are in a very difficult situation,” he said.
