The Brazilian futsal player, Claudinho Garcia, managed to leave the Ukrainian city of Kherson, the first occupied by the Russians in the war, and arrived in Brazil this week.
In an interview with CNN Radiohe said that he “was very happy to have managed to” flee the scene: “We took the risk, we had help from people on my team, people who were able to take medicine to Kherson and we took a ride to Odessa.”
From there, the embassy rescued Claudinho and teammate Daniel to leave Ukraine. Afterwards, the group went to Bucharest and got a flight to Brazil via Germany.
Regarding Kherson, the athlete said that the center “is quiet”, with no buildings attacked, but the situation is different in the surroundings: “We saw buildings knocked down, bombed, a large farm destroyed, bomb craters.”
“The whole city of Odessa is also scared, we can see in the faces of the people that danger is around”, he added.
Now, Claudinho intends to stay, at least for now, in Brazil, to be close to his mother, children and family.
