Brazilian player who is in Kherson reports strong explosions: “The building shook”

Tuesday (15) was “a very turbulent day” for Brazilian futsal player Claudinho Garcia, who is in Kherson, the first Ukrainian city taken by the Russians in the war.

“There was a lot of explosion, throughout the afternoon until dawn, we heard very strong bombs, the building shook, we were apprehensive”, he told, in an interview with CNN Radio.

According to him, news later came that Ukrainians had destroyed tanks and helicopters at a nearby airport where a Russian base was set up.

Even so, the athlete said that the city “was slowly getting back to normal”: “Commerce was back up and running, the population itself was trying to survive, but yesterday, after the attacks, there were artillery movements, the Ukrainian attack was very strong, but the Russians are not attacking civilians.”

He also stated that there were reports that Russian agents raided locations in the city to look for people who are at the forefront of the protests.

Claudinho is now hoping to catch a train to Crimea, to then enter Russia and return to Brazil.

That’s what his colleague, Ewerthon Florêncio, did, but he chose to stay, at the time: “We were very nervous about the situation, we knew the risk of leaving in the first wave, the main issue is that there were many Ukrainians leaving for Russia, I was afraid of a Russian attack.”

However, Claudinho made it clear that “if we have a second chance, we will leave”.
