The retail sector opened 204,000 new stores in Brazil throughout 2021. The number was released by the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC) this Monday (7th).
The result leads the country to achieve the best annual advance in the sector since 2018.
A study by the entity, based on data from the National Registry of Legal Entities (CNPJ), concluded that retail trade closed the year with an increase of 4.5%.
In this way, the result offset the 1.4% retraction registered in 2020, a year marked by the decree of the Covid-19 pandemic, by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The entity emphasizes that the biggest highlight in this period were small businesses.
More than 92% of the total number of businesses opened were micro-enterprises and small commercial establishments.
The two business models had, respectively, an increase of 158.2 thousand and 29.9 thousand companies.
In the regional analysis, the best performances were in São Paulo (55.7 thousand), Minas Gerais (18.3 thousand), Paraná (15.1 thousand) and Rio de Janeiro (14.1 thousand). Together, these four states concentrated more than half of the stores opened last year.
CNC President José Roberto Tadros points out that 2021 was a time of recovery for the industry.
“The relaxation of restrictions imposed on retail in several states and municipalities, especially after the end of the second wave of the pandemic, and the advance of vaccination, contributed to the trend of increasing consumer circulation and certainly stimulated the movement to reopen stores. commercial establishments”, he ponders.
The person responsible for the study, Fábio Bentes, calls attention to the challenges facing the sector in 2022, even with the signs of recovery presented in the last assessment.
“Unlike 2020, when the sector was subject to several restrictive measures to try to contain the worsening of the health crisis, the biggest obstacles to a more vigorous resumption of the level of trade activity focused on the deterioration of economic conditions”, highlights the economist at CNC.
