Brazilian startups raise US$ 174.2 million in August, survey shows

At startups Brazilian companies raised US$ 174.2 million in investments in August, according to a survey carried out by the Distrito innovation platform.

The amount was moved in 43 trading rounds, but it is 80.2% lower than that recorded in August 2021. In that month, US$ 880.3 million were invested in 77 rounds. The District states, however, that the August 2021 total was driven by specific rounds involving large startups.

“It is also worth mentioning that the total raised by startups in August of last year was the highest since we started the historical series, in 2013. When we analyze the evolution of investments, the first eight months of 2022 already exceed the total for 2020, for example, showing that the venture capital market will continue to be relevant in the country”, says Gustavo Gierun, CEO and co-founder of the District.

In the year, the study points out that the trend continues to fall in investments. From January to August 2022, US$ 3.6 billion were raised, a value 45% lower than the same period in 2021, when US$ 6.6 billion were attracted.

According to the survey, the average value of initial funding rounds grew this year. Pre-seed rounds went up from $350,600 to $788,100, while seed rounds went from $1.5 million to $2.4 million.

On the other hand, rounds of investment in more advanced stage startups fell.

In the division by segment, the fintechs , startups operating in the finance area, were the ones that most attracted investments, with US$ 97.6 million in 12 negotiations. The second place went to startups in the health area, healthtechs with US$ 47.5 million in six deals.

“Fintechs continue to lead in funding – which they have maintained since 2018. We also see a growing interest in healthtechs, which appear in second place in terms of number of contributions in the year. In terms of volume, retailtechs [que atuam no setor de varejo] stand out, with US$ 384.4 million”, says Gierun.

Among the operations in August, the District highlighted the raising of US$ 32.5 million by Dr Consulta, US$ 25.8 million by Pega Leve and US$ 25 million by Caju.

In addition to the investments, the survey indicated that 14 Fusions and acquisitions in August, a number lower than the 21 registered in the same month of 2021. In the year, there are 154 transactions of this type, compared to 155 in the same period last year. The study highlights the acquisition of Movile by iFood for BRL 9.4 million.
