Brazilian study identifies how the Covid-19 virus uses cells to replicate itself

A group of researchers from Unicamp and USP discovered how the Covid-19 virus manipulates the cells of the human body to replicate itself – and, in this way, cause an infection.

In an interview with CNN Radio the first author of the research, Érika Pereira Zambalde, said that the importance of the study is “to better understand the function of the virus and how it causes infection in the body.”

“This helps the search for new treatments to combat the pandemic that has disrupted our lives in recent years”, he added.

Basically, the virus interacts with a protein of the human organism, which acts in the replication of the DNA of the cells and, therefore, in the cell division. “The virus uses this quality to its advantage, and it replicates infected cells.”

She points out, however, that the research is “super recent”: “From it, new questions arise, the intention is to improve and understand the relationship of the virus with the protein, test other types of drugs and reduce the infection.”

The next steps of the study, which was published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiologyinvolve continuing the study in cell culture and, in the future, testing in animals.
