Brazilian wins World Cup and wins title of best barista in 2023

A Brazilian barista has won the World Barista Championship (WBC), the main international coffee competition produced annually by World Coffee Events (WCE). The objective of the competition is to promote excellence in coffee, the advancement of the barista profession and the engagement of a worldwide audience with an annual championship that serves as a hub for local and regional events around the world. The competition ended on Saturday (24).

Each year, more than 50 champion competitors prepare four espressos, four milk drinks and four original signature drinks to exacting standards in a 15-minute performance with music.

The paulistano of Korean origin Boram Um, from Um Coffee Co, which has six stores in São Paulo, won the competition.

According to the WCE, certified judges from around the world evaluate each performance on the taste of beverages served, cleanliness, creativity, technical skill and overall presentation.

The signature brew allows baristas to stretch their imaginations and judges’ palates to incorporate a wealth of coffee knowledge into an expression of their individual tastes and experiences.

This is how the final ranking was:

  • 1. Boram Um, Brazil
  • 2. Daniele Ricci, Italy
  • 3. Jack Simpson, Australia
  • 4. Isaiah Sheese, United States
  • 5. Dawn Chan, Hong Kong
  • 6. Patrick Rolf, Denmark

The winner of the competition, which this year took place in Athens, Greece, received a prize of 5,000 euros, equivalent to R$ 26,000.
