Brazilian Maressa Crisley Nunes dos Santos, from Maringá, Paraná, is hospitalized in serious condition in a hospital in Chile after being beaten during a robbery followed by an attempted rape.
The victim suffered several fractures to her face and, according to her family, will need to undergo facial reconstruction surgery. A friend who was with the Brazilian woman at the time of the crime suffered minor injuries.
On social media, Maressa’s family and friends started a fundraising campaign to raise money to cover her travel costs to Brazil, future surgeries and the medication needed for her recovery. The campaign has already raised R$27,000.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Consulate General of Brazil in Santiago, Chile, stated that it is monitoring the case and providing consular assistance to the Brazilian woman.
The Minister of Women, Cida Gonçalves, said that the department is following the case and expressed solidarity with the victim. “As soon as we received the complaint from Maressa’s sister and the National Councilor for Women’s Rights, Evelin Cavalini, we began discussions with the Brazilian Consulate General in Santiago. The Brazilian government condemns any and all acts of violence against women,” she said.
