Brazilian worker spends BRL 40.64 on lunch away from home, research shows

You workers Brazilians spend an average of R$ 40.64 to have lunch away from home, according to data from a survey by the Brazilian Association of Workers’ Benefit Companies (ABBT). In relation to 2019, the last year in which the survey was carried out, the value is 17.4% higher.

The survey was carried out in 51 cities and in the Federal District between February and April 2022 at locations that accept meal ticket as a form of payment. The calculation takes into account an “ideal dish” consisting of the dish itself, a drink (soda, water or juice), a dessert and a coffee.

Considering a complete commercial meal, the cost is around R$ 31. In the à la carte option, the value more than doubles, reaching R$ 64.83.

Spending is a national average, but the increase is not homogeneous in all municipalities. The variation takes into account factors that impact the final value of the meal, such as gas and electricity prices, seasonality of products and freight charges for transportation.

In this sense, the research points out that the highest average value was recorded in the Southeast , where a lunch away from home costs R$ 42.83. The lowest value is the Midwest of BRL 34.20.

ABBT highlights that the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA ) indicates that the inflation of food prices outside the home is 6.6% in the 12-month period ended in May. The value is lower than the high for food at home, which is 16.1%.

According to the executive director of ABBT, Jessica Srour, “despite the increase, restaurants are adapting to the new market reality brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic and avoiding passing on the increase in costs to workers”.

She also states that, without the benefit of food stamps, a worker would spend about a third of the wage for lunch out of the house, taking into account an average salary of R$ 2,548. Considering the national average, the monthly expenditure for lunch would be R$ 894.08.

ABBT’s expectation is that, despite the rise, prices will settle to pre-pandemic levels as face-to-face activities resume.
