Brazilians brought memes, gifs and jokes to Bluesky, says director

In recent days, the Bluesky has become a social network for Brazilians — and it’s not us who are saying it.

Since the suspension of X, formerly Twitter, in Brazil by order of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Brazilians have been looking for new alternatives to connect to the internet and Bluesky seems to have been the choice made by most of X’s orphans.

The increase in Brazilians meant that the official Bluesky account started publishing its posts in Portuguese: “This is now a Brazilian app”, declared the profile in a post last Saturday (31).

In an interview with CNN, the Bluesky COO Rose Wang spoke about how Brazilians are dominating the social network that less than a year and a half ago had only 10 thousand users worldwide.

Elon Musk’s platform has been offline in Brazil for exactly a week this Friday (6). Over the last seven days, 3 million new users have created their accounts on Bluesky and 85% of them are Brazilian, according to Wang, accounting for more than 2.5 million Brazilians on the platform.

Although Bluesky also has large user groups from Japan, the US, the UK and Germany, users from Brazil have already become the majority.

For the director, the Brazilian way of life helped shape the face of the social network from the beginning. “Brazilians have a very energetic posting style, which shaped the initial culture of Bluesky. There are a lot of memes, gifs, jokes and casual posts on Bluesky. I would say it is much more fun and relaxed, and people are talking more, they are having a lot of conversations and really making friends,” she said.

Wang explained that although this is the largest wave of Brazilians joining the social network, it is not the first. Since Elon Musk bought Twitter in late 2022, Bluesky has been receiving new users every time a new controversy involving the billionaire’s platform has emerged. One of the first groups to embrace the network were Brazilian fan profiles — mainly those of Taylor Swift.

“Last year, in April, when Bluesky had about 10,000 users, we already had one of our first groups of Taylor Swift fans from Brazil. And then we saw another big wave arrive in April this year and then in August,” she explained.

First Brazil, then the world

Rose Wang also spoke about the expectation that Bluesky will grow worldwide after being adopted by Brazilians.

“I think having the president of Brazil and prominent Brazilian users choosing Bluesky over any other social network is a demonstration to all other countries that Bluesky is truly a social network for everyone, and that we can welcome millions of users in a week without having any downtime,” she added.

At the beginning of the week, the STF itself opened an official account on the network.

Wang thanked Brazilians for “giving Bluesky a chance,” and promised to respond to user requests for new tools, such as videos and the existence of trending topics (lists of the most talked-about subjects at the moment).
