Brazilians in Gaza are advised to stock up on food and basic products

The Brazilian ambassador to Palestine, Alessandro Candeas, has advised Brazilians in the cities of Rafah and Khan Yunis, located in the south of the Gaza Strip, to stock up on non-perishable products purchased with resources transferred by the government.

The guidance has been given amid the escalation of the war and the resulting supply crisis that affects the most critical region of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The government has been sending money so that Brazilians and Palestinians who are part of the group awaiting repatriation can make purchases and guarantee the minimum for survival. The prices of products at the fair and in local markets, however, have tripled, sometimes quadrupled.

“We sent resources for a week. We hope that by next week they will still have the products. I always ask to stock up, so I hope you’ve been shopping for longer. We send all the necessary resources for a fair”, Candeas told CNN .

Brazilian Shahed al-Banna, who lives in the Gaza Strip and is with her family in Rafah, says in a video that, with the money she received from the government, she was able to buy flour, oil, olive oil, beans, rice, vegetables, cheese and shampoo.

“There are no alternatives. The alternative is the humanitarian corridor, which does not open. Gaza is under blockade, it was before this war and now, with the war, it has gotten worse. The humanitarian crisis that already existed is intensifying more and more and our effort is to free Brazilians from this crisis”, concluded the ambassador.

Requests for help

The Brazilian Representation in Palestine updated the number of people awaiting release to safely leave the Gaza region across the border with Egypt to 34. There are 24 Brazilians and 10 Palestinians.

The majority are children and women. A Presidency of the Republic aircraft has been waiting for the group in Cairo since October 18th.
