Brazilians tremble at coronavirus and Bolsonaro… whistles indifferently

Nearly eight in ten Brazilians believe the Covid-19 pandemic is out of control in their country and more than half are “very afraid” of being infected with the new coronavirus, according to a new Datafolha poll released today.

These concerns are raised as well President Zaich Bolsonaru has replaced the Health Minister for the third time, while the Latin American country has become the epicenter of the pandemic with more daily deaths than any other country in the world.

The Datafolha poll showed how 79% of respondents said the situation was out of control, from 62% in the previous poll in January.

Brazil recorded the second deadliest day of the pandemic on Thursday, with 2,724 lives lost due to Covid-19, just two days after a record 2,841 deaths. On Wednesday, the Department of Health announced a record 90,303 new cases, more than the US, which until then had the most infections.

Fifty-five percent of those polled said they feared the virus would spread, from 44% in January. Even young Brazilians as well as wealthier citizens fear being infected.

Datafolha’s survey was conducted by telephone interviews with a sample of 1,023 people on March 15-16 and has a margin of error of 2%.

Support for Bolsonaro has plummeted as Brazil faces a deadly second wave of the pandemic, dominated by a new, more contagious local variant, with patients flooding Hospital Intensive Care Units in major cities.

A Datafolha poll released earlier this week found that 54% of Brazilians consider the far-right president’s handling of the health crisis bad or very bad, up from 48% in January.
