The Minister of the Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Paulo Pimenta, stated this Monday (16) that Brazilians awaiting authorization to leave the Gaza Strip remain sheltered in houses in the city of Khan Yunis and in the Rafah region.
The assessment is that, under these conditions, the group is safer, less tense and less anxious than if they were in the middle of the street. This Monday (16), thousands of people of other nationalities dawned crowded in front of the gates of the Gaza border with Egypt.
Brazil is currently working to remove a group of 32 people from the conflict area. There are 22 Brazilians, seven Palestinians with a temporary visa or residence permit in Brazil and three Palestinians who are relatives of Brazilians.
Despite the difficulties, Paulo Pimenta still believes that the group will be able to cross the border with Egypt today. “We are anxiously waiting for Israel to authorize the Brazilians to leave today,” the minister told CNN .
The Brazilian government has negotiated on all fronts in an attempt to make a humanitarian corridor viable.
Over the weekend, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) personally entered the negotiations. He called the Palestinian authority Mahmoud Abbas, the president of Israel, Isaac Herzog, and also the president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi.
A presidential plane — sent on Thursday (12) specifically to rescue Brazilians in Gaza — continues in Rome, Italy. He is just waiting for authorization to go to Egypt.
