Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement categorically denying the involvement of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government in an alleged hacker action against the Paraguayan government. The demonstration came in response to a report from the UOL portal that reported an alleged operation of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) against computers in the neighboring country. The correspondent of CNN Luciana Taddeo learned the repercussions of the case in both countries.
According to the UOL story, there would have been the planning of a spy operation to access confidential data from Paraguayan computers. The goal would be to obtain information for negotiations on Itaipu hydroelectric dams, shared between the two countries.
Itamaraty, however, stressed in a statement that Paraguay is a member country of Mercosur and with which Brazil maintains historical relations and a close partnership. The portfolio stated that the alleged operation was authorized by the previous government in June 2022, but was made without effect as soon as the current administration became aware of the fact in March 2023.
Reactions in Paraguay
In Paraguay, the authorities reacted with concern even before the Itamaraty demonstration. The Minister of Industry and Commerce Paraguayan told TV ABC Color that the subject was being treated very seriously, describing it as an unprecedented event.
In turn, the Paraguayan chancellor stated that the country has already been the target of hacker attacks on Chinese organisms and was working on the safety of its systems in cooperation with the United States and Taiwan. However, he stressed that he had no evidence of a hacker attack from Brazil.
The Brazilian government reiterated its commitment to respect and transparent dialogue as fundamental elements in diplomatic relations with Paraguay and all its partners. Abin has not yet officially commented on the case.
