THE CNN professor of International Relations Eduardo Viola analyzed the political situation in Venezuela and Brazil’s position in the current scenario. Viola stated that Brazilian influence over the neighboring country is “irrelevant”.
According to the expert, Venezuela “is already captured by the axis of autocracy”, becoming a battlefield similar to a second Cold War.
Viola criticized the Brazilian government’s stance, pointing out Itamaraty’s ‘low analytical capacity’, despite its vast diplomatic experience.
Political and epistemological obstacles
The professor highlighted that the Brazilian government faces difficulties in recognizing the Venezuelan reality, in part due to its participation in BRICS, described by him as “an alliance of autocracies led by China”.
Viola argued that this association represents an anti-Western component that aims to alter the international liberal order.
“Recognizing the reality of Venezuela is a political and even epistemological obstacle for the Brazilian government,” Viola said, suggesting that Brazil, as a democracy, should align itself with other democratic nations.
Despite this, for the expert, the Brazilian government “leans towards autocracies”.
Worrying prospects
Eduardo Viola warned of the possibility of a new wave of Venezuelan migration, comparing the situation with the history of Cuba.
He foresees a scenario in which, after failed attempts at opposition and subsequent repression, an entire generation of opposition activists and leaders could leave the country.
Viola stressed, however, that the conditions for leaving Venezuela are currently “terrible” compared to previous Cuban exodus experiences, further worsening the humanitarian situation in the South American country.
