Brazil’s million-strong city paralyzed by drug gang attacks

Because of the riots by drug gangs, the Brazilian city of Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas, has stopped public transport and closed schools, according to The Guardian. The riots erupted after police shot and killed the alleged leader of one of the gangs.

Authorities in the state of Amazonas said dozens of buses, public buildings, banks and private cars were attacked in Manaus, where more than 2 million people live.

State Governor Wilson Lima has demanded that National Guard units be deployed to the city after 21 vehicles were burned.

Due to the threat of attacks, coronavirus vaccination centers were forced to close. Manaus was severely affected by the epidemic: by October 2020, studies showed that more than 75% of the city’s population had been infected.

State Security Minister Luismar Bonates said the attacks were in response to the death of Eric Batista Costa, known as “Dadinho”. Suspected of human trafficking, he was killed by the police on the evening of June 5, 2021, during an operation in the suburb of Redenao, west of Manaus.

29 people were arrested, 27 are suspected of direct participation in the riots, two of planning attacks.

  • In January 2017, a riot in Manaus prison killed more than 50 people.
