Breaking!: US non-farm payrolls rise by 216,000 in December compared to the 170,000 expected

Nonfarm payrolls (NFP) in the US increased by 216,000 in December, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported on Friday. This figure far exceeded market expectations, which expected an increase of 170,000 jobs. For its part, the increase of 199,000 registered in November was revised downwards to 173,000.

Other details in the report showed that the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.7% and annual wage inflation, measured by the change in the average hourly wage, rose to 4.1% from 3.9% in December.

Market reaction to nonfarm payrolls

In immediate reaction, the US Dollar (USD) has strengthened against its main rivals. At the time of writing, the DXY Dollar Index is up 0.55% at 103.00.
