Another difficult year was 2021 for the country’s casinos, which recorded an increase compared to 2020, but with total turnovers (Total Gaming Revenue – TGR) and gross revenue (Gross Gaming Revenue – GGR) remaining much lower. from pre-pandemic levels. A fact which raises intense concerns about the hopes of recovery of many casino companies that have been in the “red” for years.
According to the final data of the Gambling Supervision and Control Committee (GSC), the total turnover of casinos (TGR) amounted to 869.7 million euros in 2021 and was increased by 34.34% compared to 2020. Gross revenue GGR, ie revenues after player winnings and rewards, amounted to 107.5 million euros last year, recording an increase of 26.14% compared to 2020.
Despite the improvement from the first year of the pandemic, the figures for 2021 turn pale ahead of those for 2019. At that time, the total turnover (TGR) was 1.68 billion euros and the GGR was 246 million euros. In short, the country’s casinos remain at 50% of the turnover and revenue they had before the outbreak of the pandemic.
This can be seen from the participation of casinos in the total size of the gambling market in our country. In 2021, 3.87% of the total turnover (TGR) of all games and 5.79% of the total gross revenue (GGR) came from casino gambling. In 2019 the percentages were 10.53% and 11.07%, for TGR and GGR respectively.
Public revenues from casinos for 2021 are estimated at 22.48 million euros. This amount includes, in addition to the participation of the State in the GGR, the income from the special annual operating fee of these companies, as well as the income from the tickets. In 2020 the State received from the casinos about 19.47 million euros and in 2019 it received about 49.33 million euros.
The dominance of slot machines
For another year, the games that dominated the casinos were the slot machines, ie the so-called “slots.” According to the data of 2021, 74.01% of the turnover (TGR) of the casino companies came from the slot machines, while The turnover from table games was 25.99%, respectively, the gross revenue (GGR) from slot machines was 64.73% of the total GGR of these companies, while those from table games at a rate of 35.27%.
According to the EEEP, this trend of superiority of slots over tables in the financial results of games conducted by casino companies, began to gradually crystallize from 2005 onwards and, today, has now acquired a permanent character, demonstrating a steady orientation. of players to options that are in line with modern technology and do not require knowledge of special rules of conduct.
On the other hand, the board games that show playability in Greek casinos are those of American Roulette, Black Jack, Poker and Mini Banco Punto. Other board games such as American Dice, Baccarat or Caribbean Stud Poker, widely used in other countries, are not currently offered by Greek casinos.
