The special advisor to the Presidency of the Republic for international relations, Ambassador Celso Amorim, said this Tuesday (22) that “the world can no longer be seen and dictated by the G7”.
He made the statements in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he is participating, alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the 15th BRICS Summit.
The main theme of this year’s summit is the expansion of the bloc. China and Russia are working very hard to bring more countries into the BRICS.
The Chinese intend to use the expanded group as a platform in their increasingly heated geopolitical dispute with the United States.
The Russians, in turn, need more friendly countries in their zone of influence, especially after the severe sanctions imposed by the West over the war in Ukraine.
Some analysts believe that the arrival of new countries defending “a new global order” could lead the Brics group to be a counterpoint to the G7, the bloc of developed Western democracies – led by the United States.
In his speeches, Amorim made clear his view that the world is changing and that global governance needs to keep up with this movement.
For him, the expansion is a “global affirmation” of the Brics.
“Countries wishing to be partners or full members of the BRICS demonstrate that (the group) is a new force in the world and that the world can no longer be seen and dictated by the G7,” he said.
“(Former US President Barack) Obama already realized this when he said that the G20 replaced the G7. Now there is a tendency due to rivalries between the USA and China, due to the war in Ukraine”, he said, summarizing the process of discussion of the expansion of the bloc.
According to the Itamaraty, Brazil is not against the increase of the group, but defends the adoption of clear criteria on which countries could join the Brics and at what moments.
The leaders of the five member countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will define during this summit, which ends on Thursday (24), how a possible expansion will take place.
