Briday Greiner: American basketball star sentenced to 9 years in prison in Russia

Court of of Russia eventually sentenced to 9 years Briday Greiner, who is an American star in basketball and WNBA champion. Specifically, the Russian authorities had been arrested on February 17 at the airport in Moscow, because they found hemp oil in her luggage, while it was used as a diplomatic document by Russia, against the American sanctions on war in Ukraine.

According to Reuters, a img familiar with the situation said the US is willing to trade convicted arms trafficker Victor Booth, whose life helped inspire the 2005 Hollywood film Lord of War, starring Nicolas Cage with the basketball player.

Russian officials stressed that an agreement had been reached. They argue that Greiner – known as “BG” to basketball fans – broke the laws of the land and should be judged accordingly. Donald Trump has reacted to a possible agreement.

In fact, the 31-year-old WNBA superstar spoke of a mistake in her apology. “I made an honest mistake and I hope with your decision that my life doesn’t end here,” Greiner told the court before breaking down in tears.

Condemnation by Biden, NBA and WNBA

The political world and not only in the US condemned Russia’s decision, with the White House publishing its statement Joe Bidenwho noted the following:

“Today, American citizen, Brittney Greiner, received a prison sentence that is yet another reminder of what the world already knew: Russia is wrongfully holding Britney. It is unacceptable and I call on Russia to release her immediately, to be with her wife, loved ones, friends and teammates.”

Also, Greiner’s conviction brought a reaction from his commissioners NBA and his WNBAwhere they issued a joint statement.

“Today’s verdict and condemnation is unwarranted and unfortunatebut not unexpectedly Brittney Greiner remains unjustly detained. The commitment of the WNBA and the NBA to her safe return has not wavered and we are hopeful that we are nearing the end of this process of bringing BG home to the United States,” said the statement signed by WNBA commissioners Kathy Engelbert and NBA, Adam Silver.
