“Bridgerton” doubles with two more seasons, but will they hold up without the Duke?

Since the first season was released, it’s been roughly two days before audiences and the press have been clamoring for a second season of Bridgerton. In the interviews, showrunner Chris Van Dusen took time: he explained that Julia Quinn’s books are many and that the dream would have been to make a season for each of them, deepening each time a different character of the house. Bridgerton and the Regency world. Netflix, however, played with cunning: it waited for four months to pass and that Bridgerton became the most viewed series on the platform to announce that the show will not only go on with only a second season already under construction and, probably, ready for release as early as Christmas, but also with a third and fourth, in short, oysters and champagne. The fact that the streaming giant has announced the treble of Bridgerton four days after the announcement of the abandonment of Regé-Jean Page has, however, cooled the spirits and asked the spectators a laudable effort of the imagination: there may be Bridgerton without the Duke of Hastings?

If you asked a Shonda Rhimes, the same woman who took out Derek Shepherd, Cristina Yang and Izzie Stevens from Grey’s Anatomy, he would probably answer yes. Also because, according to what was anticipated by Page Six, apparently Page chose not to return in the second season of Bridgerton precisely because of creative differences with Shonda, who would have thought of a more secluded and side role for him in the future. This obviously must not have convinced Regé-Jean that, after turning down the $ 50,000-per-episode offer to appear as a guest, evidently thought of abandoning the ship before it crashes against the iceberg of boredom: just a week after its release, Page received very tasty offers that the actor, taking advantage of the lucky wave, decided not to let it escape, how to appear in the latest film by the Russo brothers together with Ryan Gosling e Chris Evans, not exactly two strangers, and take part in an ambitious project like the transposition of a beloved video game like Dangerous & Dragons. Bridgerton, instead, it remains there: with three other seasons confirmed and the doubt that the aura of interest that accompanied the first season, teased by a multiracial society, by costumes, by plumes and, not least, by sex, may fade at any moment.

It will start again, as we know, from Lord Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), Daphne’s brother ((Phoebe Dynevor) who will find love (spoiler!) in Kate, played by the charming Simone Ashley. Joining her will be fresh and young new faces like Charithra Chandran (Edwina, her half-sister), Rupert Young (Jack, an English gentleman) and Calam Lynch (Theo, a painter’s assistant), but no trace of the Duke. Shonda says that “Bridgerton made us fall in love “and, in fact, there are many users who hope that Van Dausen will deepen potentially interesting characters in the coming seasons such as Eloise (Claudia Jessie), Colin (Luke Newton), and of course Penelope (Nicola Coughlan). All beautiful, for heaven’s sake. After all, there is a lot of material to sell (the Bridgerton family, after all, is made up of eight brothers, it would be enough to bring them to Italy to give the GDP a strong shock), yet a doubt remains: if it was above all the spoon with which the Duke makes love that remained most impressed in the first season, are we really sure that everything else is solid enough to make it into season four?

We understand that Page chose not to move forward for fear of being trapped in a character for life as he happened with Patrick Dempsey who, after six years, continues to be Doctor Strangelove for everyone, yet something tells us that it will not end just like that, and that Bridgerton it might become a bit like The Lady of the West, a series that Millennials know well. At the end of the fifth season, Joe Lando, the lead actor, was sacked by showrunner Beth Sullivan for creative differences, convinced that the series could do without him. It was not so. Fans were so outraged that they put on a campaign known as Save our Sully (the name of the character of Lando) strong enough to push the production to find a solution to bring him back and calm the spirits. Agree that Shonda Rhimes is not Beth Sullivan and she proved it to us, but who knows what to ensure long life to Bridgerton things don’t change soon.
