A recent Forbes article about the series, written by author and activist Virgie Tovar, caused a stir when it referred to the couple as “mixed weight” placing the focus on the characters’ different body types in a way that some found sexist.

Julia Quinn which inspired the hit Netflix franchise) know that Penelope has secretly been yearning for Colin’s attention from the very beginning.

As celebrated as the couple is, Tovar’s article acknowledges the problematic discussion the characters’ relationship has generated. “For some, this novel is disturbing because it forces them to consider that humans are simply not governed by neat, predictable rules,” Tovar writes. “If this novel disturbs you, that says more about how deeply you have internalized fatphobia than about the bodies of the actors playing them.” Penelope and Colin .”

The article generated mixed reactions, with some celebrating the discussion and others criticizing the terminology used in it.

Writer and critic Zoë Rose Bryant shared on X: “I find it interesting how there are countless fictional couples in film and television where the man weighs more than the woman, but people haven’t started writing articles about what the heck a ‘mixed-weight romance’ is until it’s the other way around.”

A CNN reached out to Tovar for comment on his Forbes article.

Coughlan said she was aware of conversations being had about her plus-size body after the first two seasons and “specifically asked for certain lines and moments to be included” in the new season, which features racy sex scenes between her character and Newton.

“There’s a scene where I’m very naked on camera, and that was my idea, my choice,” Coughlan added at the time. “It felt like the biggest ‘screw you’ to all the conversations around my body; it was incredibly empowering.”
