Bridget Jones 4 arrives in 2025: but did we need it?

Bridget Jones calls and Renee Zellweger he answers (for the fourth time). After two successful chapters and a third, Bridget Jones's Babycreated more to ride the nostalgia effect of fans than for a real narrative need, it is now official that the most famous single in cinema will soon return with a new chapter, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, produced by Universal Pictures and Working Title and still featuring the character created by Helen Fielding at its centre. Confirmed, of course, Zellweger and, surprisingly, Hugh Grantthe legendary Daniel Cleaver who was presumed dead (later revealed to be alive) in the third film, ready to usher Bridget into a new phase of their lives.

According to initial information, Bridget Jones 4 will land in cinemas on Valentine's Day 2025, with the hope that the new episode can replenish the coffers of a franchise which, for now, has grossed a whopping 760 million dollars at the global box office. The question, however, remains: did we need another chapter of Bridget Jones?

Probably not. Ever since Bridget made her film debut the concept of singleness has changed a lot on both a cultural and social level. Although the film – especially the first chapter – played a lot on the stigma that singles suffer in their public sphere – something which, unfortunately, still persists today – one wonders what this character still has to tellespecially because it seemed clear that Jones was doing everything he could to get out of that condition and into a relationship as soon as possible, a concept that today would clash with the message put forward by many activists. All that remains is to wait to understand what direction the story will takealthough we're a little sad at the thought of never seeing Colin Firth's Mark Darcy back in the mix.
