Brit Awards doubles number of nominees in gender-neutral categories

The British pop music award Brit Awards has doubled the number of nominees in the gender-neutral categories, organizers reported this Friday (24).

The action took place after a protest against the list of candidates for the best artist 2023 award, made up only of men.

Both “artist of the year” and “international artist of the year” will have ten nominees starting next year, instead of five.

The change, resulting from “wide consultation” after the 2023 awards, aims to “improve representation and inclusion”, said the awards’ organizer, the British Phonographic Industry.

“Brit is committed to making the show as inclusive and representative as possible. The changes to this year’s categories are part of an ongoing process of evolution, and we will continue to analyze, listen and learn,” said Jo Twist, chief executive of the British Phonographic Industry, in a statement.

The organization introduced gender-neutral awards for local and international artists in 2022, eliminating female and male categories.

New award for R&B

The Brit Awards will also add R&B to its list of musical style categories, which already includes Alternative/Rock, Dance, Pop and Hip Hop/Grime/Rap.

Eligibility for the R&B music genre award will span a period of 24 months, rather than the usual 12 months, to ensure more artists can compete.
