Britain: 20 fines for Downing Street party scandal

London police have announced the imposition of 20 fines for violating the rules for dealing with Covid after the completion of its report on parties organized in the circles of British power in the middle of a severe lockdown, a scandal that struck Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

In its announcement, Scotland Yard does not specify who the persons to whom the fines have been imposed.

Around January, the case seemed to shake up Prime Minister Johnson, who found himself one step ahead of his exit from Downing Street because of the effects of the scandal on both his parliamentary group and British public opinion. However, the circumstances created by the Russian attack on Ukraine helped Boris Johnson escape.

However, the results of the Scotland Yard investigation that concluded that the violations have indeed taken place are likely to bring the scandal back to the surface, even more so if in the process it is found that one of the twenty fines concerns the British Prime Minister himself.

The Scotland Yard survey focused on more than ten parties that took place during the period 2020-2021. Boris Johnson participated in several of these rallies.

Revelations of a party on Downing Street and elsewhere in Britain’s power, at a time when the British were forced to abstain from any social event to deal with the epidemic, shook the British leadership and the prestige of Boris Johnson, whose popularity collapsed.

Before the House of Commons, the British Prime Minister presented some kind of mea culpa, but refused to resign, saying that he would wait for the results of the police investigation.

Scotland Yard did not specify the identities of those fined, citing rules of professional conduct. He also did not clarify which party concerns the imposition of fines, so as not to “photograph” the offenders.

Police have not completed their investigation into the scandal and have vowed to do everything possible to make rapid progress. He clarified that it is possible that the imposition of new fines will follow if there is sufficient evidence for violations of the rules.
