Britain: An early end to the Truss-Sunak debate because the presenter fainted

The debate between the two candidates vying to succeed Boris Johnson in Britain ended dramatically on Tuesday when the moderator fainted.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, the betting favorite to win the Tory leadership election, and former finance minister Rishi Sunak had been arguing their plans for about 30 minutes when there was a loud “bang” in the studio.

It happened while the camera was on Trass at the debate presented by Talk TV and the Sun newspaper. Truss put her hands to her face and said, “Oh my God,” and the show then went off. Talk TV said the presenter, Kate McCann, had passed out.

“Although he is fine, medical advice has been that we should not continue with the conversation. We apologize to our viewers and listeners,” Talk TV said on Twitter.

Before the untimely end, Truss and Sunak clashed again over their tax and spending plans and what they would do to deal with the cost of living crisis.

Truss says Sunak’s insistence on balancing the government’s books and raising business tax would send the economy into recession.

Sunak, whose resignation from the administration earlier this month led to Johnson’s downfall, argued that the money from the tax increases he brought in was needed to pay for extra health care spending.

Tuesday’s debate was the second face-off between the two candidates.

A YouGov poll of Conservative Party members, who will ultimately decide the next leader, found 50% that Truss had the best performance in the first “clash” on Monday, with 39% backing Sunak.

The winner of the election will be announced on September 5.
