Britain announces new sanctions against 178 separatists in eastern Ukraine and Russian oligarchs

Britain announced today that it is expanding, in coordination with the European Union, the list of people to whom it imposes sanctions, in order to include 178 pro-Russian separatists and their new oligarchs and relatives, according to a statement from the Foreign Office (Foreign Office).

“The British government is imposing sanctions, in coordination with the EU, on 178 people who support the illegally seceded regions of Ukraine”, following “a lot of information last week according to which Russia targeted, in a barbaric way, civilians in these areas, “the Foreign Office said in a statement.

The sanctions include Alexander Ananchenko and Sergei Kozlov, described by London as leaders of the “self-proclaimed” pro-Russian separatist “democracies” of Donetsk and Luhansk.

“In the wake of the horrific rocket attacks on civilians in eastern Ukraine, we are now imposing sanctions on those who support the breakaway territories and are suspected of atrocities against the Ukrainian people,” Foreign Minister Liz Tras was quoted as saying.

“We will continue to target all those who help and incite Putin’s war.”

The government says the sanctions target a total of 206 people, including 178 separatists, but also “six oligarchs, close associates and officials and 22 additional people in the emergency room”.

Also included are Pavel Ezubov, a cousin of Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, and Nigina Zairova, an executive aide to businessman Mikhail Friedman.

Maria Lavrov, the wife of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, is subject to a travel ban and a freeze on assets.

The government will also pass a bill this week to ban the import of iron and steel products as well as the export of quantum technology, high-tech materials and luxury goods.
