A ban on Britain in the state-owned Russian media outlet RT could lead to a reciprocal ban by Moscow on the BBC and other media outlets, British Foreign Secretary Liz Tras said today.
Britain accused RT of being a tool of the Kremlin’s misinformation campaign last week and called on the UK media regulator to take action if necessary, following the recognition of the two rebel-held areas in eastern Ukraine.
Russian officials say RT is a way for Moscow to compete for dominance of global media companies based in the United States and Britain, which Moscow says convey a biased view of the world.
“We are considering what we can do with RT, but the reality is that if we ban RT from operating in the UK, it could lead to the banning of channels like the BBC in Russia,” Tra told parliament.
“And what we want is that we want the Russian people to hear the truth about what (Russian President) Vladimir Putin is doing.”
