Britain bans ships bound for Russia from its ports

LAST UPDATE: 14.47

Britain said on Tuesday it had passed a law banning all ships with any connection to Russia from entering its ports, according to Reuters.

Britain said Monday it wants all ports to deny entry to Russian-flagged ships as it drafts new legislation.

“We have just become the first nation to pass a law that includes a total ban on all ships with any connection to Russia in British ports,” Transport Minister Grant Shapps said on Twitter.

The ban will take effect today, said a spokesman for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“The law will come into force this afternoon,” he said, adding: “The ban will apply to Russian-flagged, privately owned, inspected, chartered or operated ships, and will include private yachts.”
