Britain-blast in Liverpool: 4 arrested released

Four men arrested in connection with the investigation into a taxi explosion Sunday in Liverpool, northern Britain, have been released after questioning, police said today.

The perpetrator of the blast, described by police as a “terrorist act”, is a taxi passenger named by anti-terror police as 32-year-old Imad al-Suelmin, a Christian refugee from the Middle East.

Four men aged 20, 21, 26 and 29 were arrested on Sunday and yesterday, Monday, as part of this investigation.

“After the interrogation of those arrested, we are satisfied with the testimonies they gave and they were released,” said Ras Jackson, head of the counterterrorism service, in a statement issued overnight.

At this address, Imad al-Swelmin boarded a taxi on Sunday morning to go to a gynecological hospital in Liverpool. The bomber struck shortly before 11:00 a.m. local time (13:00 Greek time) in front of a hospital on Sunday, a day of remembrance for those killed in the war in Britain.

The driver of the taxi, who was injured in the explosion, was discharged from the hospital where he was treated, according to a police announcement yesterday.

A couple of Christians living in Liverpool, Elizabeth and Malcolm Hitchcott, told ITV that Imad al-Swelmin had lived with them, that he had renounced Islam to become a Christian and that he had been baptized in Liverpool Cathedral.

“He stayed here for 8 months and we lived together. We were never given the impression that something was wrong,” Hitchcott said, adding that he was “shocked”.

Following this attack, Britain yesterday upgraded the level of terrorist threat on British soil to “serious”.
