Boris Johnson has resigned as the leader of the Conservative Party after a barrage of resignations in his cabinet and betting firms are gearing up for the race to succeed him.
Johnson will remain as caretaker prime minister until a new party leader is appointed, with the timetable for his succession process to be announced next week. However, odds on betting sites already offer clues as to what will happen next.
The dominant successors
The Minister of Defense Ben Wallacewho is widely regarded as having delivered an adequate response to Britain’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is the favorite to succeed Johnson according to Sky Bet, which gives him odds of 2/1 to be the next Tory leader.
THE Rishi Sunak he is the second most likely candidate of the platform after he resigned from the leadership of the Ministry of Finance.
Other sites give lower odds for Wallace though, such as 888 Sport’s 6/1, according to Oddschecker.
The Minister of Commerce Penny Mordoseen as having strong credentials in the party due to her pro-Brexit stance as well as leadership qualities, is third favorite to succeed Johnson at odds of 7/1 on Sky.
The foreign minister Lees Truss and the former Minister of Health Sajid Javid round out Sky Bet’s top five contenders.
Outsiders for the position include the deputy prime minister Dominic Raab and the former Secretary of State Jeremy Huntboth at odds of 14/1.
The new finance minister Nadeem Zahawi and the Tory cadre Tom Tugdenhat are also considered, but with even lower probabilities.
Finally, despite growing speculation of a general election this year, bookmakers reckon it’s more likely to happen in 2023 or later.
