Britain today ordered the country’s ports to block any ship flying the Russian flag or believed to be registered, owned or controlled by anyone linked to Russia, as it stepped up pressure on Moscow.
The British Minister of Transport Grand Saps stated in a letter to all ports in the United Kingdom that further detailed sanctions against Russian shipping are being prepared after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“The shipping industry is fundamental to international trade and we must play our part in limiting Russia’s financial interests and holding the Russian government accountable,” he said in a letter posted on Twitter.
Saps said Russian ships were no longer allowed to dock in UK ports and that any vessel believed to be owned, controlled, chartered or operated by anyone connected to Russia should be barred from entering.
Any ship operated by a “named person” or any ship flying the Russian flag or registered in Russia must also be excluded.
“We will seek to assist UK ports in locating Russian vessels within the scope of the above and will contact the relevant ports directly when locating vessels destined for UK ports that fall within the scope of the above,” he added.
