Britain considers housing Ukrainian refugees in confiscated houses of Russian oligarchs

Britain is considering whether it can use real estate owned by people who have been sanctioned in the country for humanitarian purposes, Housing Minister Michael Gove said on Sunday, Reuters reported.

“I want to explore an option that would allow us to use the homes and properties of people who have been sanctioned for as long as they have been sanctioned for humanitarian and other purposes,” Gove told BBC television when asked if of sanctioned oligarchs could be used to house Ukrainian refugees.

“There is a fairly high legal bar that needs to be overcome and we are not talking about permanent seizure, but we are saying, ‘you are sanctioned, you support Putin, this house is here, you have no right to use it or profit from it’ and “… if we can use it to help others, let’s do it.”
