The British Health authorities announced today 54,674 new cases of Covid-19, out of the 51,870 daily cases reported a day earlier, recording a new higher daily total in the last six months.
The daily cases of the last four days are the highest recorded since January 15.
Britain today recorded 41 deaths within 28 days of being diagnosed with Covid-19 in patients, less than the 49 recorded yesterday, Friday.
The reversal of the British government, which announced that fully vaccinated UK residents returning from France would eventually be quarantined, sparked frustration and anger shortly before the expected easing of health rules.
From Monday, fully vaccinated in the UK and coming from “orange” countries, including many tourist destinations in Europe, such as Italy or Spain, will no longer need to quarantine upon arrival in the UK.
However, France will be an exception due to the “persistent presence” of cases of the Beta variant of the coronavirus, the government announced on Friday afternoon.
The governments of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to take the same action.
For its part, France has tightened its rules and announced that from Sunday, unvaccinated travelers from the UK will have to undergo a negative PCR or antigen test less than 24 hours in advance.
The British decision is a blow to the travel industry, which was hoping for a “significant recovery” in its activity.
