British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said she supports Prime Minister Boris Johnson “100%” after two of his cabinet ministers resigned earlier, as reported by the BBC.
Finance and health ministers Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid tendered their resignations earlier, as Johnson himself sought to apologize for a fresh sexual misconduct scandal involving a member of his government last week. Johnson admitted his mistake but said he had not realized that Chris Pincher, the former deputy in charge of party discipline, was unfit for the job.
“In hindsight, it was a mistake. I apologize to anyone who was affected by it,” Johnson told reporters.
Downing Street’s initial, vague response to this new crisis was heavily criticized. The prime minister’s office initially claimed Johnson was unaware of the earlier allegations against Pincher when he appointed him deputy head of party discipline in February. But when it was revealed he had been aware since 2019, he said Pincher’s appointment was “a mistake” and apologised.
Labor leader Keir Starmer commented that it was clear that Johnson’s government was collapsing. “After all this sloppiness, scandals and failures, it is clear that the government is now collapsing,” he said in a statement.
