Britain’s Conservative Party MPs and former health secretaries Jeremy Hunt and Sajid Javid have announced in interviews with The Telegraph newspaper that they will run to succeed Boris Johnson as Tory leader and prime minister.
Both Hunt, who was defeated by Johnson in the 2019 Conservative leadership race, and Javid have said that if they become prime minister they will cut corporate tax to 15%. Javid also said he would scrap the increase in social security contributions decided in April.
“It’s very clear why I want to do it,” Jeremy Hunt told the Telegraph of his decision to run. “It’s because we have to restore trust, grow the economy and win the next election,” he stressed.
Sajid Javid, who has also served as finance minister, told the newspaper: “We cannot afford not to go ahead with tax cuts.”
