Britain freezes assets of 386 Russian State Duma deputies

Britain has announced a freeze on assets and a travel ban on 386 members of Russia’s lower house of parliament, the Russian lower house of parliament, who voted in favor of independence for two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, according to Reuters.

Britain has previously announced its intention to impose sanctions on Russian lawmakers as part of a package aimed at punishing Russian President Vladimir Putin for his invasion of Ukraine.

Friday’s announcement said the sanctions were imposed for “their support for the Ukrainian breakaway regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.”

“We are targeting those who are complicit in Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and those who support this barbaric war,” British Foreign Secretary Liz Tras said in a statement. “We will not reduce the pressure and we will continue to tighten the Russian economy through sanctions.”

The new sanctions will bar 386 lawmakers from traveling to Britain, gaining access to assets located in the UK and doing business there, the Foreign Office said.
