Britain freezes assets of Abramovich and six other Russian businessmen

LAST UPDATE: 15:17

Britain has frozen the assets of seven Russian businessmen, including Roman Abramovich, Igor Setsin, Oleg Deripaska and Dmitry Lebedev, after being added to the country’s sanctions list, Reuters reported.

In all, Britain said the seven people added to the sanctions list because of their relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin had a combined net worth of 15 15 billion.

“There can be no safe haven for those who supported Putin’s brutal attack on Ukraine,” said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“Today’s sanctions are the latest step in the United Kingdom’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people. We will continue to pursue those who allow the killing of civilians, the destruction of hospitals and the illegal occupation of sovereign allies.”

There have been growing calls from British lawmakers for action against Abramovich, owner of Chelsea shares in Evraz and Norilsk Nickel, as well as other Russian businessmen, criticizing the Johnson administration for not moving fast enough against the European Union and the United States.

Chelsea are now effectively controlled by the British government after imposing sanctions on Russian owner Roman Abramovich on Thursday.

Abramovich had announced that he would sell the Premier League club last week.

The process has now been suspended, leaving the West London club, ranked by Forbes as the seventh most valuable in world football with $ 3.2 billion, on standby, operating under a special government license.

“If the club is sold, Abramovich will not benefit,” said Sports Minister Nadine Dorries.

The others added to the list were Oleg Deripaska, a member of the En + group, Dmitry Lebedev, chairman of Bank Rossiya, Alexei Miller, CEO of Gazprom, Nikolai Tokarev, chairman of the Russian state-owned pipeline company Trans Andrei Kostin, President of the Russian bank VTB.
