Civil Protection in Greece, in emergency events, sends citizens a message via 112 in order to draw their attention and warn them of what is happening. The emergency message will also be piloted in the UK on the evening of the 23rdher April. The British will receive at cell phones them the message, which will be accompanied by a 10-second warning tone that will sound even if the phone is on silent mode, reports the BBC report.

The system, which went live yesterday, is modeled after similar systems in use in the US, Canada and Japan.

Messages will only come from her government Britain or emergency services, will initially focus on severe weather events and will then include terrorist threats. It will be possible to send a message to 90% of mobile phone users within the area that will concern the phenomena. The messages will contain details of the area where the phenomena are breaking out and instructions will also be given on how citizens should move.

Minister Oliver Dowden told the BBC that the warnings were being sent in a “very targeted way” and hoped that, apart from the test, the warning would not be heard too often. Anyone who does not want to receive such messages should disable the relevant notifications on their mobile phone. However, British officials are urging citizens not to switch them off as they can be life-saving.
