Britain has added the daughters of Russian President Putin to the sanctions list it announced today, as did the United States, in a bid to target the lifestyle of those close to the Russian president.
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Britain and other Western allies have announced several rounds of sanctions targeting Moscow’s wealthy industrial elites and their access to the international banking system.
Putin’s adult daughters, Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsava, as well as Sergei Vinokurova, the daughter of Foreign Minister Lavrov, have been named in Britain ‘s list.
All three were sanctioned by the United States earlier this week.
“The unprecedented package of sanctions is hurting the elite and their families, and it is downgrading the Russian economy to a level that Russia has not revived since the fall of the Soviet Union,” said British Foreign Secretary Liz True.
Britain also showed in its analysis that Russia was leading to a deeper recession since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Britain estimates that 60% of Russia’s foreign exchange reserves have been frozen as a result of international sanctions.
