Britain today announced the imposition of sanctions on oligarch Vladimir Potanin, known as “The King of Nickel”, whom he described as the second richest man in Russia.
Potanin is on the list of people against whom the latest wave of 13 new sanctions will be imposed, including other businessmen, financial companies and other entities.
“Potanin continues to amass wealth as he supports Putin’s regime by acquiring Rosbank and shares in Tinkoff Bank after the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” the statement said.
Potanin is one of the richest people in Russia, although the net worth of his fortune depends heavily on the value of his stake (36%) in Nornickel, the world’s largest producer of palladium and refined nickel.
The list of British sanctions states that Potanin’s name was added because he “benefited from or supported the Russian government by owning or controlling Rosbank.” which is an area of strategic importance to the Russian government. ”
