Britain could welcome hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing Ukraine to escape the war in the coming weeks, said British Health Minister Sajid Javid.
Following the launch of the Government Homes for Ukraine program at the weekend, Javid said those arriving in Britain would receive all the support they needed.
This assurance was given by the Minister of Health at the time when the latest assessment by the British Ministry of Defense warns that the Russian forces are seeking to encircle the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv.
Javid defended Interior Minister Priti Patel, who insisted that security checks were needed on refugees from the war in Ukraine to prevent Russian spies from infiltrating the UK.
Speaking at the Conservatives’ Spring Forum in Blackpool over the weekend, Patel said it was “naive” to assume that just because most people arriving in Britain are women and children, Kremlin agents could not be among them.
Javid noted that although the controls should be “proportionate”, Salisbury’s attack in 2018 with a neurotoxic agent underscores the need for vigilance.
“We saw in our country that Russian agents came here with a deadly neurotoxic agent, a chemical weapon, and used it in Salisbury. We know that this killed people and Russia is directly responsible for that,” he told Sky News. therefore it is right to have some level of security controls “.
Javid noted that Britain has already issued 9,500 visas to Ukrainians with family ties to Britain, while 150,000 people have expressed interest in hosting refugees through the Homes for Ukraine program.
“I am pleased to support Ukraine in any way we can, whether it be military aid, humanitarian aid, or indeed providing shelter to those fleeing Ukraine,” he told LBC radio.
