Britain: Healthcare workers in England should be vaccinated against Covid-19 by 1 April

Health workers in the UK should have been vaccinated against Covid-19 by April 1, Health Minister Sajid Javid said today, making vaccination a prerequisite for the employment of those at the forefront of the National Health Authority (NHS).

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is trying to tackle a difficult winter for his country’s healthcare system without imposing financially damaging lockdowns, with the aim of helping protect against the spread of Covid-19.

Javid said he had to balance the benefits to patients and colleagues with concerns that employees might decide to quit their jobs rather than be vaccinated. He pointed out that the pressures in the workplace are a reason that the measure will not be implemented until the spring.

“Everyone who works in the NHS and welfare should be vaccinated. We must avoid the harm that can be prevented and protect patients in the NHS, protect colleagues in the NHS and, of course, protect the NHS itself,” he said. of parliament.

“We intend the application of this condition to be imposed from April 1”.

According to the British Minister of Health, there will be exceptions for those who can not be vaccinated for medical reasons and for those who do not come in direct contact with patients.

The decision follows a similar measure to make vaccines mandatory for nursing home workers, which will take effect on Thursday.

There are about 100,000 health workers who have not yet received the first dose of a vaccine, Javid said.

“No one in the NHS or welfare who has not been vaccinated at the moment should be treated as a scapegoat, excluded or ashamed,” Javid said. “Our goal is to support them to make a positive choice in order to protect vulnerable people, to protect their colleagues and, of course, to protect themselves.”

The British Health Minister also said that the health consultation also considered the idea of making flu vaccination mandatory. He stressed that he would not introduce claims for flu vaccines at this stage, adding, however, that the option remains open.
